‘Agumbe-The Land of Infinity’
Here the rain converse with you, sometimes it whispers, sometimes it shouts out loud. Monsoon here is just not a season but a way of life. Welcome to the land of evergreen forest-Agumbe. Often called the “The Cherrapunji of the South” this Eden teeming with an indigenous wildlife is located at Shimoga district, in the Malnad region of Karnataka, India (approximately-350 kilometers from Bangalore).
After boarding the bus from Majestic bus depot, it took us around 8-9 hours to reach our destination. A foggy, misty and wet morning welcomed us at Guddekeri. After a brief Tul Tuk (Auto-rickshaw) ride and a small walk down the dense forest track we reached our campsite at Kālinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology (KCRE) nestled beautifully among the rainforest, camouflaging its presence to the evergreen woods.
After a brief on the regular checklist and the basic dos and don’ts by the highly able naturalist Udit Chohan we started our proceedings for the day.
KCRE is a labor of love started by world-renowned herpetologist Gowri Shankar who holds an unparalleled knowledge and understanding of the King Cobras. Alongside, Prashant another knowledge power house has dedicated his life to this research and education center which promises to better educate the mass on rainforest ecology and promote the idea of conservation and appreciation of among them.
The next two days under the leadership of Nithin. S. Bharadwaj the owner of Wild Side of Me and our tour guide along with Raviprakash S.S-The BBC Macro photographer of the year 2014 gifted us an enriching tour, filled with knowledge on photography that sensitized us better on rainforest ecology and photography as well.
Agumbe, hosts secrets at every fold. It is the mecca of macro photographers. As the clock turns the tides, Agumbe changes its beauty accordingly. From the mist that embraces the dawn to the millions of cosmos that peeps through the opening of your tent-you are enchanted in a land that is truly untamed.
If adventure runs in your veins you may have the Pit Viper hanging by the branch of the kitchen or the King Cobras lurking in the unknown corners of this land of infinity. Presenting here are few of the moments that made me take the maiden voyage the maiden at the land of bounty in Western Ghats.
